Aluminum welding is challenging due to the high thermal conductivity and a lower melting point of aluminum.  This combination can easily result in burn-throughs, especially when working with thinner aluminum sheets or performing more fine aluminum welding.

 

To overcome these obstacles, the most common aluminum welders use either Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) or Metal Inert Gas (MIG).  Both welding options cause high heat and can be used to weld thin gauges of aluminum together.

 

It is possible to perform aluminum welding with a torch, but this method is difficult due to the heat fluctuation.  Torch welding is difficult to maintain a consistent high heat, and therefore burn-through is more likely when working with aluminum welding compared to other metals.
